About the MPO

What is the Brevard MPO?
The Brevard Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is a regional, multi-jurisdictional agency tasked with transportation planning and programming for the expenditure of state and federal transportation funds.  The MPO is mandated by federal and state law to provide a continuing, cooperative and comprehensive transportation planning process in order for federal and state transportation funds to be spent in the Brevard area.   The MPO annually establishes project priorities, which are considered by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) when programming state and federal transportation funds.

Who is the MPO?
The Brevard MPO consists of nineteen (19) elected officials from local governments in Brevard County. In addition, the Brevard MPO has several advisory committees, including the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), the Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC), and the Bicycle, Pedestrian & Trails Advisory Committee (BPTAC).

A complete list of advisory committees and members is located on the Members & Committees page.

What is the role of the MPO?
The MPO is responsible for planning and programming for the expenditure of state and federal (not local) transportation funds.  The MPO also provides technical guidance to local governments regarding transportation planning issues.  As a result, the MPO develops several work products, including annual project priorities, a five year transportation improvement program (TIP) developed cooperatively with FDOT and a long range (20 year) transportation plan (LRTP).

Please note that the MPO is a planning agency and not an implementing agency.  Projects are funded and implemented by other agencies such as FDOT, Brevard County, Space Coast Area Transit or municipalities.
